What If? -- The Tale of Ben Par

The game of “What If” has never been one of my favorites, however, Morning Read’s Senior Editor, Matt Newman posits a clever version as the PGA Tour winds to its thrilling conclusion. What if a PGA Tour professional shot only par on every hole, of every tournament he played? How much money would he make? What tournaments would he play in, or miss the cut at and head home? The idea is not new, and has been bandied about over the years, but was first the subject of an article in 2015 by Tour player and former caddie, Brian Mull, about his fictional player, Tom Par. Soon others took up the challenge and wrote about Tom Par’s extended family, the latest being Matt Newman’s Ben Par. Needless to say, missing every putt except to make par is no way to challenge the likes of Dustin Johnson, or qualify for a major, but you would consistently make over $400,000 in prize money.
