The 3 week gauntlet, that is the PGA Tour Playoffs race for the FedEx Cup, is here. Currently the only two Palm Beach County residents in the top ten of the FedEx Cup standings are Patrick Cantalay (3rd) and Justin Thomas (9th). However, that could drastically change after just the first event, as points are quadrupled. Fellow Palm Beach County residents Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, and Daniel Berger all figure to play their way up the standings going into the Tour Championship.
At 24 years old, the young phenom and two time Major winner, Collin Morikawa looks to continue his scorching play and remain atop the standings. In today's data driven world, Collin Morikawa's success is driven by his unparalleled ball striking where he leads the tour in strokes gained approach, and strokes gained tee to green. If his putting is strong over the next three weeks, he will be tough to usurp.
Another great story is Jordan Spieth's ascent back to being one of the top players in the game. Spieth currently holds the second spot in the FedEx Cup standings. Just last year Jordan had plummeted to 82nd in the official World Golf Rankings. His strong play has brought him all the way back to number 12 in the world.
Local favorites Tiger Woods and Rickie Fowler will not be competing in this years playoffs. Jupiter Island resident Woods is still rehabbing after a bad car accident suffered in February of this year. Fowler on the other hand failed to qualify after his worst year as a professional. One of the most like-able and philanthropic players, and with a baby on the way, we hope to see Rickie back in form in the coming season.
